Why Smart Leeds is about connectivity as much as ‘Govtech’

Stephen Blackburn, Data and Innovation Manager at Leeds City Council on participation in the GovTech Catalyst and the importance of 100% Digital Leeds

Leeds is participating in the GovTech Catalyst a £20m cross-government initiative run by the Government Digital Service. This has been providing funding to five companies who have working with the council on digital projects with potential to deliver the linked outcomes of improved housing and health for people in Leeds.

Projects are concerned with various applications of digital technologies that could impact the quality of housing provided as well as the health of its residents, and include remote management of properties, monitoring of air quality and other factors; use of IoT in domestic settings and collecting and presenting data about the functioning of domestic appliances like boilers.

But as the conversation shows, fundamental issues like digital literacy and skills, and access to the internet, continue to feature large on Leeds’ ‘smart’ agenda. These are being tackled through a partnership signed earlier this year with BT to deliver full fibre connectivity across the city, and the inclusion programme 100% Digital Leeds
