@vickysargentSafina Mistry, prevention lead at WMAHSN, Andy Williams of Sandwell & West Birmingham CCG, and public health consultant Jo Robins explain why….
This programme was recorded at the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN) conference Putting Prevention into practice and improving outcomes. The conference was held in Birmingham on 14 September 2018 and was heavily over-subscribed.
Safina Mistry (who organised the event) leads for WMAHSN on self-care and prevention but also works in public health at Birmingham City Council. Andy Williams is the Accountable Officer, Sandwell and West Birmingham CCG, and has been much involved in preparing local sustainability and transformation plans (STPs - prepared jointly by NHS and local authorities to plan health and care resourcing). Jo Robins, is a consultant in public health with Shropshire Council and a regional lead on social prescribing.
The conversation revolves around why the traditional medical approach to health and wellness, with emphasis on treatment and medication, has become unsustainable at a time when members of an aging population may have five, six or even seven long term conditions (such as diabetes, respiratory disease, dementia…) in their later years.
The incidence and impact of such conditions can be reduced if people can be persuaded to take greater care of their diet and lifestyle, but also if the authorities pay more attention to the social determinants of health – things like housing and welfare - that local councils are concerned with.
Changing mindsets of both individuals and professionals within the health/care ‘system’ is a major challenge, and need to start with changing the ways that health and care outcomes are measured.
