Cllr Simon Harris, housing manager Laura Fisher, and Richard Shipton of Hitachi Solutions tell CLGdotTV’s Vicky Sargent about Shropshire Council’s harnessing of tech to support older people in their own homes.

The Shropshire Council Tech Severn event on 17 July focussed on "pioneering technology in Education, Government, Health, Housing and Industry." Councillor Simon Harris, housing manager Laura Fisher, and Richard Shipton of Hitachi Solutions were persuaded to take time out of what proved to be a day packed with content and opportunities to tell CLGdotTV’s Vicky Sargent about Shropshire Council’s harnessing of tech to support older people in their own homes.

One important ingredient in the Shropshire model is that housing and social care come under the same leadership, which makes it easier for housing and care needs to be considered together. Interestingly, the emphasis is on using ‘everyday tech’ that most people already have, rather than specialist devices. Software and apps for many requirements already exist. The key to success is putting these together in configurations that users find work for them. Another feature of the Shropshire approach is that members of the community who are already using technology to support their remaining in their own homes are encouraged to help others in the community understand what can be achieved.
